Apparently unpublished and very unusual
Lot 901
PHRYGIA, GALATIA OR CILICIA. Uncertain. 1st century BC. AE (Bronze, 22 mm, 7.05 g, 12 h). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. Eagle with spread wings alighting left on thunderbolt; in fields, caps of the Dioscuri surmounted by stars (erased). Cf. Obolos 24 (2022), 233 (Tarkondimotos). RPC I -. SNG Levante -. SNG Paris -. Apparently unpublished and very unusual. The reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, good very fine.

Ex Leu Web Auction 28, 9-14 December 2023, 1546 and previously from a European collection, formed before 2005.

Stylistically, this unusual coin is reminiscent of issues of the Galatian king Deiotaros or the Cilician king Tarkondimotos, but it does not carry any legends. Furthermore, the reverse is clearly derived from civic bronzes from Apameia in Phrygia, but the caps of the Dioscuri were erased from the die.
